What is FUE?

FUE stands for Follicular Unit Excision. It is a surgical technique used to extract individual hair follicles from a donor area, usually the back or sides of the scalp, and transplant them into areas affected by hair loss.

Unlike traditional methods such as FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), FUE does not involve removing a strip of skin. Instead, it leaves tiny, dot-like scars that are nearly invisible, especially if you wear your hair short.

Why Do Patients Choose FUE Over FUT?

FUE is often preferred for its:

  • Minimal scarring with no linear incision

  • Faster healing time and lower discomfort

  • Flexibility for short hairstyles

For many patients, especially those concerned with appearance and downtime, FUE offers an ideal combination of precision, comfort, and outcome.

Once the hairs have been harvested, our highly trained medical technicians prepare the donor follicles under a high power stereo microscope. The use of a stereo microscope allows our surgical team to examine each follicle to ensure it is of the best quality for transplantation. At Jae Pak MD Medical, we use the most innovative technology to ensure our patients have the best results.

Does the FUE procedure produce the best outcome?

An image showing a patient's FUE hair transplant journey This patient of Jae Pak M.D. had significant recession along the corners of the hairline. A FUE Hair Transplant surgery helped fill those areas.

The implantation of the hair follicle is the same for FUE, Long Hair FUE and FUT(STRIP) harvesting methods and all are reliable methods. The technical skill of the surgeon relates to how the hairs are removed from the donor area (harvested). The artistic skill of the surgeon relates to how the hairs are placed (implanted) in the recipient area. These two factors determine your final result.

FUE is a harvesting, or removal technique. Your final results will depend on how the hairs are placed or implanted more than how the hairs are taken out. The surgeon’s skill level and artistic ability will factor into how good and natural the results of the hair transplant will look. The placing or implantation of the hair follicle is the same for both FUE and FUT (STRIP) harvesting.

The doctor will individually plan and create sites in which each hair follicle will be placed in the correct direction and angle, and the hair grafts are distributed properly. This is very meticulous work and why it is so important to choose an experienced doctor with both technical and artistic abilities.

How Much Does FUE Hair Transplant Cost in Los Angeles?

If you’re asking, “How much does a FUE hair transplant cost in Los Angeles?” The answer depends on a few key factors. Most clinics charge on a per hair basis but say it is based on the hairs not the grafts.

Each hair graft can have 1-5 hairs in it. At Jae Pak M.D. Medical, FUE is priced at $8 per graft, not per hair. The number of grafts you need is determined during your consultation and is based on the size of the area you're restoring, your hair density, and your long-term goals. Here are some typical examples:
Number of Grafts
Estimated Cost
1000 grafts
$8,000
2000 grafts
$16,000
3000 grafts
$24,000

What Factors Affect the Price of FUE?

When considering hair restoration cost in Los Angeles, it helps to understand what goes into your total investment.

1. Graft Count

The more grafts you need, the higher the cost. Graft count is based on the severity of hair loss and the density you want to achieve.

2. Surgeon’s Expertise

A board-certified hair transplant doctor like Dr. Jae Pak may charge more per graft than high-volume clinics. His skill ensures better hairline design, safer procedures, and longer-lasting results.

3. Technology Used

The use of specialized extraction tools, robotic systems, or custom-designed instruments can affect cost. Dr. Pak uses advanced, precision tools developed through his own patents.

4. Case Complexity

Some patients require additional planning, especially if they have scar tissue from prior procedures or need body or beard hair transplantation. These cases may be priced differently based on time and technique.

Is FUE Worth the Cost?

When considering the FUE hair transplant cost in Los Angeles, it’s important to consider value, not just price. Cheaper clinics may reduce costs by:

  • Using inexperienced technicians instead of licensed doctors

  • Rushing procedures through high-volume scheduling

  • Compromising on design, technique, or follow-up care

  • Charging by the hair but saying by the graft to make patients think they are receiving more hairs during surgery than other clinics.

With Dr. Pak, your results are not only natural and permanent but tailored to your facial features and hair type. This minimizes the risk of revision surgery and ensures a long-term investment in your appearance and confidence.
